Scott is a confirmed morning person who enjoys holding a good cup of coffee in one hand and an inspirational book in the other. He’s crazy about his kids and melts when his wife walks into the room. Scott finds joy in strengthening the work and ministry of others, even as God works through his flawed, outrageous humanity. He strives for authenticity and cherishes the beautiful and brilliant irony that brokenness helps make a person whole.
Known as a teacher, mentor, coach, and leader, Scott’s passion is helping others on their spiritual and vocational journeys by listening, equipping and encouraging. He spent too much time in school and has the diplomas to prove it. But he doesn’t let that get in his way. Scott’s more concerned about his story than his title. He likes honest questions and one day hopes to overcome his own imperfections.
He possesses self-confidence, strong relational skills, and a hunger to learn. But he also struggles with insecurity, pride and occasional apathy. With an eye for detail and a heart for the mission, he seeks to inspire greatness, instill hope, overcome challenges, and celebrate successes. Teamwork ignites him. Solitude refuels him. Seeing people discover their passion and put it into action brings him extraordinary satisfaction.
With a personal and professional goal to finish well, endurance and consistency matter to Scott. For more than 20 years, he has worked in ministry and non-profit environments. He’s directed youth camps, visited with prisoners on death row, strummed a guitar publically, spoken to hundreds of people, labored among the destitute, mobilized communities, cried on D-Day beaches, held a dying friend’s hand, stared longingly at the summit of Mt. McKinley, and sung in a Billy Graham crusade choir. Even so, Scott finds contentment and fulfillment in the “little things.”
As a student of history, Scott refuses to make the same mistakes twice. But sometimes he loses count. He reads Proverbs most days, watches little TV, and attends church with other broken and bent people. Competing in several road races helped him understand the value of preparation and the exuberance of crossing the finish line – without noticing the time. If you can’t reach him, you may find him paddling his kayak, hiking a trail with his family or plotting his next adventure.
Scott admires anyone willing to put their thoughts onto paper (or tablet), but he is drawn to the published works of CS Lewis, Philip Yancey, David McCullough, Brennan Manning, Eugene Peterson, and Bill Bryson. Though he’s yet to write a book himself, Scott keeps promising to begin writing tomorrow. He’s still learning to comprehend social media and is astounded that you’re reading this blog.
His wife taught him that the two best words in the English language are “hope” and “wonder.” Scott knows the first person he must lead is himself and that being right is not the most important thing – being forgiven is. Believing there are no small gestures of forgiveness, he enjoys the love and support of gifted and gracious friends. Scott relishes opportunities to inspire, execute and deliver but knows that all success is shared success.
Feel free to share your story or vision with him. You may have little or much in common. Scott may write too much or too little about himself and you may soon forget that you read this blog at all. Or, you may enjoy a connection and find a new way to understand something you already know to be true. Hope and wonder. Let’s get going. To get in touch with Scott, click on the Contact page (above).
